VAFA community unites to address online sports gambling risks

The Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) has kicked off a series of impactful information sessions as part of The Real Stakes, a new program arming community football clubs with the knowledge and strategies to understand and address the harm stemming from online sports gambling.

The engaging workshop, attended by 120 Club Presidents and leaders on February 17, provided eye-opening insights into the tactics used by online sports gambling companies to promote risky gambling behaviours.

As part of the session, participants heard from people with lived experience of gambling harm about how real and widespread the impacts of gambling harm can be.

Participants also learned practical approaches to support teammates who may be struggling with online gambling.

The session highlighted the range of free, confidential, and judgement-free support services available, including:

  • The 24/7 Gambler’s Helpline (1800 858 858) for advice and referrals
  • Online chat and email support from professional counsellors via Gambling Help Online
  • Face-to-face and phone counselling services
  • Peer support meetings for those affected by someone else’s gambling

Importantly, these services guarantee complete privacy, with no personal information shared with clubs, leagues, family or friends without consent.

During the workshop, participants were made aware of simple but powerful strategies to minimise gambling harm, foster a supportive club culture, and initiate caring conversations with teammates they’re concerned about.

VAFA Chief Executive Officer Jason Reddick expressed his appreciation for the session.

“It was incredible to see our members actively engaging and learning how to recognise gambling harm,” Mr Reddick said.

“This session really highlighted how much we care about supporting each off the field.

“We’re excited to continue this journey, knowing that together we can create a safer environment for everyone involved in footy.

“We’re excited to continue empowering clubs and their members with the tools they need to protect what matters most – their people.”

VAFA Wellbeing Project Manager Claire Castle described the first information session as a significant milestone in bringing The Real Stakes to life.

“It was incredible to witness the participants’ openness in learning about gambling harm and how to address it within their communities,” Ms Castle said.

“This program isn’t just about raising awareness, it’s about creating lasting change, giving people the confidence to take action when it matters most.

“We’re just getting started, but seeing the enthusiasm and commitment from everyone today proves we’re on the right path to making a real impact.”

The workshop was the first of 15 The Real Stakes sessions taking place across Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth in the coming months. All players, committee members, volunteers and parents are encouraged to register for a session near them.
