Perth Football League takes action against gambling-related harm

To address the growing risks of online sports gambling, the Perth Football League (PFL) has partnered with The Real Stakes, a community-led initiative aimed at empowering local footy clubs.

The PFL recently conducted an insightful workshop, bringing together club leaders to discuss the impact of online sports gambling and develop strategies to support those who may be affected.

The interactive session, held on February 24 and attended by 130 club leaders, shed light on the sophisticated tactics used to drive repeated engagement of online sports gambling.

Attendees also gained valuable skills to assist teammates who may be grappling with online gambling issues.

The workshop introduced participants to a variety of free, confidential, and non-judgemental support services, including:

  • 24/7 Gambling Helpline (1800 858 858) for guidance and referrals
  • Online chat and email support from trained counsellors through Gambling Help Online
  • In-person and telephone counselling services
  • Peer support groups for individuals affected by another’s gambling

These services ensure strict confidentiality, never sharing personal details with clubs, leagues, family, or friends without permission.

During the session, participants learned actionable strategies to reduce gambling-related harm, promote a supportive club environment, and engage in empathetic discussions with teammates they’re worried about.

PFL Chief Executive Officer Andrew Dawe commended the workshop’s impact.

“It was wonderful to see our members’ actively engage in understanding the complexities of gambling related harm,” Mr Dawe said.

“This session underscored our commitment to supporting one another both on and off the field.

“We’re excited to continue on this journey, recognising that by working together, we can foster a safer environment for everyone involved in footy.”

The Real Stakes’ Perth-based ambassador, West Coast Eagles AFLW Captain Emma Swanson, said the workshops were a pivotal step towards addressing gambling related harm throughout our football community.

“As a woman in footy, I know first-hand that gambling related harm doesn’t discriminate,” Ms Swanson said.

“It’s a common misconception that only men are at risk, but the reality is that women are just as susceptible to the negative impacts of online sports gambling.

“Through The Real Stakes, we’re breaking down these stereotypes and ensuring that everyone in our community – regardless of gender – has access to the support and resources they need to address this issue.”

Fellow Perth Ambassador, West Coast Eagle Matt Owies, said he was proud to be involved in a program designed to encourage open and honest conversations about online sports gambling in footy clubs.

“By breaking down the stigma and providing judgement-free support, we can help people who may be struggling and prevent harm before it starts,” Mr Owies said.

“Footy is all about looking out for your mates, both on and off the field. The Real Stakes is equipping our community with the tools to do just that when it comes to online sports gambling.

“Together, we can make a real impact and ensure that our clubs remain a safe and supportive space for everyone.”

The workshop was part of a 15-session series across Perth, Melbourne, and Adelaide in the upcoming months. Players, committee members, volunteers, and parents are all invited to sign up for a free session in their area here.

By learning to recognise warning signs and provide meaningful support, we all have a part to play in addressing online sports gambling harm within our footy communities.
